Installing Patches (Direct2Drive)
The following must be done in order to install and use any of the 1.03 - 1.05 patches on a Direct2Drive version of the game.
Registry Settings
The Direct2Drive version of the game does not use registry settings. This fools the installer into thinking that Warlords IV is not installed on the machine. To overcome this registry settings must be manually added before running the installer. You should be comfortable using the regedit program before attempting to add these settings.
Step 1: Click the Start button, select 'run' and type regedit then hit Enter.
Step 2: When regedit starts, expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then Software folders. Look for an 'Ubi Soft'. If there is no 'Ubi Soft' you must create it. Right click on the Software folder and select New->Key. Click on the newly created key folder and select rename. Rename to 'Ubi Soft' (There is a space between Ubi and Soft).
Step 3: Right click on Ubi Soft folder and select New->Key. Click on the newly created key folder and select rename. Rename to 'Warlords IV' (There is a space between Warlords and IV).
Step 4:Right click on the Warlords IV folder and select New->String Value. Click on the newly created string value and rename to Directory. Add another string value called File.
You should now have something that looks like this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ubi Soft\Warlords IV\Directory
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ubi Soft\Warlords IV\File
The keys used in the registry for the patch are the values of Directory and File. Their values should be set to match your game's installation... so something like
C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Warlords IV\
and
C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Warlords IV\Warlords4.exe
(Don't forget the trailing slash on the first one!)
Step 5: Right click on Directory and select Modify. Enter the path where the game is installed (eg C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Warlords IV\). Then right click on File and enter the path and game file name as shown above.
The patch can now be installed.
Copy Protection
The Direct2Drive version of the game embedded the copy protecting into the XML files that the game uses. This copy protection scheme causes the Warlords executable in the patch to not work because it doesn't contain code to deal with the copy protection. So the XML files must be replaced.
Step 1: Download the Direct2Drive Fix and Direct2Drive Fix Scenarios archives from the downloads section.
Step 2: Extract the archives. The order doesn't matter. Just make sure to extract over top of the existing XML files. You'll know you got the location correct if you are asked to overwrite the existing files. Say 'yes to all'.
The game is now patched and can be run.
NOTE: The steps in this article only have to be done one time to turn the Direct2Drive version into the original CD version of the game so future patches don't require going through these steps again unless you do a full re-install of the Direct2Drive version of the game.
