I have no idea how active this site is but I'll give it a try.
I tried to run the game on win 8 but all that happens is that the screen changes settings for a second or so and then turns back to desktop.

I installed all the patches and I experimented with several different compatibillity mode settings.

I moved the game from the programfiles folder, I changed the screen resolution to 1024x768.

I installed the game from disc. I now realize that I should not have put in all the patches as they were for the direct to drive version.

What compatibility mode settings should I use?

Solved it I think. I put in some of the patches from the downloadsection it worked fine. The music doesn't work properly but I don't really care about that part.

The site is fairly active once someone notices your post. The regulars tend to only look in once or twice a week.

Anyway, glad you got it working. You are correct that one of the patches is for the Direct2Drive version. But all the 1.03-1.05 patches are for any version of the game so you should be able to patch to 1.05 (including A and B too). Just avoid the Direct2Drive fix.
