TOPIC: Battle for Wesnoth

I was looking for TBS-games the other day and stumbled upon Battle for Wesnoth. Has anyone here tried this game? Seems reasonably popular and free to play. Perhaps it should be added to spin-off projects in the side menu. Anyway, feel free to share your thoughts on this game.

Haven't played it myself but one of my friends really likes it. He has tried to convince me to try it but so far he was only able to make me d/l it.
I didn't really interpret it as a spinoff project to the Warlords series though. It seems to be more oriented towards just staying alive and holding positions rather than conquering the world. But I might be wrong. Maybe someone else with some real experience of it would know. EDIT: Just spoke to my friend and he said it's rather a spinoff from Panzer Generals or something similar. |

Has anyone here tried this game? I played through one of the campaigns and started a second. (But I kind of got bored with the game and stopped playing some time ago.) Perhaps it should be added to spin-off projects in the side menu. Not only is it not a spin-off, it's not even remotely like Warlords. In Wesnoth:
It seems to be more oriented towards just staying alive and holding positions rather than conquering the world. But I might be wrong. Games are generally about taking out your opponents hero(s). (Heroes come from the same pool of unit types as non-hero units. What makes them heroes is that they are called a "hero", given the special ability to produce troops when in a keep, and lose you the game if they die.) Since you need a hero in your keep in order to produce units, heroes often hang around the keep (well behind the front lines) a lot. They can be moved to the front to fight as well, and if your upkeep is sucking up all of your income and you need to bust forward to get new cities moving your hero to the front may be useful. Games are generally "timed" in two ways: Finish in some number of turns or you lose. Finish before some smaller number of turns and get a gold bonus (amount depending on exact speed) for the start of the next scenario. This time aspect means there is a very strong incentive (kind of like a horse that is getting whipped hard) to push forward quickly, definitely not just "staying alive and holding positions". Unit upkeep and unit purchase price mean you need income, and almost all income derives from holding cities. You can't really defend all of the cities -- you simply don't have enough units. So usually there are fronts of sorts, though for battles it pays to concentrate a lot of units into a small area, so these fronts will frequently not extend across the map and will only cover a small % of it, so getting flanked is very possible (and even common if you're not any good at the game or your opponent just has one or more really fast moving units). Day/night, terrain and unit skills are all pretty crucial to battles (and terrain and some unit skills are crucial to maneuvering), so to be any good you have to take them all into consideration (both yours and your opponent's). Anyway, feel free to share your thoughts on this game. From an execution perspective (few bugs, decent interface, graphics, sound, AI) it seems to be a very well made game (though the graphics are definitely cartoonish). I'm not sure how much I like the actual game mechanics though -- but I don't hate them either. The game really punishes you for "just winning" rather than "winning well". If you are playing a campaign with multiple scenarios, you may find it hard/impossible to win the later scenarios just because you had a hard time in earlier scenarios. E.g., it took you a long time to win the last scenario (perhaps despite having had a gold bonus), so this scenario you get no gold bonus which makes it even harder and you do even worse. Or you had a hard time in an earlier scenario and lost some good/experienced units, and so in the current scenario all of those units are unavailable and you are getting creamed (because, as scripted, the AI opponent has good units popping out). Because of this a lot of players will save/reload -- they may do it for individual battles (to avoid losing experienced units, or even just to avoid having too much damage at the end of the battle), and they may also do it for entire scenarios (once they see the whole map and figure out how to beat the scenario efficiently they replay the whole damn thing so they can maximize gold bonus and minimize experienced-unit losses). Some scenarios can be basically impossible to win until you "know the trick" which means you're forced to reload/replay (and maybe check out their forums to find out how others have won the scenario). In terms of being lots of fun and keeping me wanting to play more -- Wesnoth seems to be a bit of a fail. I've blown countless hours on Warlords 3, Age of Wonders (every game in the series), Heroes of M&M 1..3, Imperialism, Galactic Civ, and a number of other TBS games. Also RTS like Warlords Battlecry, Kohan, Starcraft, Warcraft 1..2. Not so with Wesnoth. (To be fair, I'm not sure how much I would like HofM&M if I went back to it today -- having played better games like Age of Wonders might make it hard to go back and still enjoy it. But the rest hold up to the test of time.) |

I also played it for while, its basicall what the battle isle series used to be, but not as good imo - its just a save and load fest
Has its addicting side tho |
