TOPIC: Reign of Death: Feedback and discussion thread
Reign of Death: Feedback and discussion thread 10 years, 11 months ago #1098
Reign of Death has been out for a few weeks now and I'm interested in knowing what my players think about it. So I've created this thread which is specifically for discussion and feedback from players.
I'm hoping to one day release another campaign set in Etheria which involves one of the races which have no campaign at the moment. I have prelimery plots for the Dark Elves, Barbarians and Demons. At some point I will put this up to a vote. I based many of my scenarios geography on saves games from when I personally played the campaign missions or from other scenario maps. So to the best of my ability I made sure that the geography was actually in keeping with the geography in the original games. In one case (Grasping for a Citidel) I actually melded multiple maps geographies together. |

I haven't finsihed yet, but I got to the part where I have to reconquer the Northern Tundra.
Overall I rather like it, but there were two main things that bothered me. The first and more important of the two is the loss of the Moonguard and Iceguard along with all the improvements I've invested in them. That sucked. For future campaigns I would prefer it if you don't remove any units. The second is the addition of all the new units. Maybe i'm just weird, but I prefer sticking to only the default units (I don't even use Stormheim units) and the new additions are cluttering up the lists in custom side creation. On the positive side I liked the storyline and how it ties together with existing campaigns. My favourite scenario was the stealing of the Horn of Kor. Being unable to produce any units was quite a surprise! |

Being unable to produce any units was quite a surprise! Well I put the loss of the Moonguard and the Iceguard in order to add challenge to the game because generally speaking one of the things that players do is upgrade a certain unit to maximum, it's a case of testing whether you are able to adapt yourselves to a new situation, maybe I overdid it by taking away two units. But no I won't be doing it next time, but I might do it again one day once people have been lulled into a false sense of security. As for new units, well it's impossible to depict certain canonically existing factions without custom units. At the same time I don't think I've overdid it, although for the protagonist perhaps I have. The protagonist uses 3 custom units while 5 are normal units. |

The main issue with losing units and the improvements invested isn't the difficulty. It's getting emotionally invested in something (the super unit I've been building up) and then having it taken away without warning.
What I'm trying to say is that it isn't as much of a strategic problem as it is an emotional problem. It just fels bad to lose something you've been building up through several scenarios. Taking a unit away could work out well, if the player eventually got it back. For example you're a dragon themed faction and you have an artifact that lets you control dragons and it get stolen so you lose your dragon units, but then after a few scenarios you recover it and get the dragons back and it feels great. But I don't want to sound too negative. I am enjoying the campaign in general and I loved certain parts of the writing. The line about the life of an elf being worth exactly 12 human lives was absolutely brilliant. |

I take your point, I would have reintroduced Moonguard and Iceguard had I had the space but basically I'd have to remove other units in order to reintroduce them, thus annoying a whole load of other people who had invested in those units. And you've just reminded me that I've missed out Dragons as the 23rd faction. |
