TOPIC: How to play email or multiplayer games
How to play email or multiplayer games 8 years, 4 months ago #1490
Hi
I am a long-time fan of DLR and have played it with a friend since '98. But for practical reasons we would like to try playing over the internet. It seems from the other posts that this can be done using online portals, but I cannot see a description of how it is done via email. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks, Viking |

Viking,
Do you want to play a PBEM game or a 'live' game where you are both online and moving at the same time? To play a PBEM game is simple. You just select 'email' game in the initial game setup. When each player finishes their turn it creates a save game file that you email to the other person so they can play their turn. Turns are password protected so you can't cheat If you want to play live you can use a portal. Or you can play directly by IP address. To play directly: 1) One person hosts the game (select multi-player, then host, then IP game type). 2) This person then sends their IP address to the other player(s). To get your IP address, go to www.whatismyip.com. That is the IP address you can text/phone call to the other players. 3) The other players select multi-player, then 'join'. They then enter the IP address and they will join the game. Note: The person hosting must have their routers + firewalls setup to allow incoming connections or else this won't work. You can do this by port forwarding OR having a DMZ on the router AND allowing a port in your firewall (or turning it off while you play). Usually when I host I test to make sure everything works before anyone tries to connect to me. You can do this by starting a game as host. Then start DLR a 2nd time (you can run it twice) and connect to your original game (using the IP address). If you can connect to yourself then anyone else can connect too. KGB P.S. As for portals, I am not sure any are up and running anymore. There used to be one but I haven't been there in years to know if it's still running. |

For multiplayer game you shall Instead try online version at warbarons.com remake of warlords.
The game has stable server, which keeps player turns so you do not need to send emails. Also there is a community awaiting to challenge you. |
