TOPIC: Newbie working with .pcx files?
Newbie working with .pcx files? 11 years, 5 months ago #1099
Hi there! I used to play Warlords III: DLR a _lot_ when I was younger, and have recently started delving into the game once again.
I've really been trying to work with the idea of creating my own scenario, but am stuck with the .pcx file for my own custom units. Using Molotov's Darklords Editor, I have duplicated the "Archers" unit by creating a new unit called "Archers (Lan)", and copying all of the other fields to match those of "Archers" (by manually inputting each of the fields). I changed the Filename field to "L_Archer" as I assume this is how it knows which files correspond to this unit. All I'm trying to do at the moment is create a variant colour of the regular Archer unit. Using PhotoShop, I used colour adjustment to create a red variation of the archers PCX image file, and made sure that the pink background and red dividing lines are all left the same as the original image. I then saved the image as "L_Archer.pcx", to match the Lan_Archer filename in Molotov's Editor. My variant red Archers are showing in Molotov's editor fine, including the transparency of the background. I can also select and use the unit fine within the game itself - the change of name shows in-game, and I can use them as well as the original archers. However, the game is displaying the regular Archers unit when I use my "Archers (Lan)", rather than my red variant. Any idea why this might be? I can't understand why it's showing the regular Archer image at all, since this is a separate unit, and I have changed the filename - so I would expect an error rather than it to show another unit's image. The fact that it's showing the Archer image (of all choices) is making me suspicious that there's some connection between the unit data and image that I've missed when duplicating the default Archer data. Is there something I've missed? Thanks in advance, hope someone is still here to read this! EDIT: OK, I've had a development. Just found out that Warlords is in fact using my PCX image - I tried adding some black splotches on the artwork for the "Archer (Lan)" unit's .pcx image and the black smudges have in fact made a difference in-game. However, the red hue that I applied to everything (including the artwork itself) isn't showing. Any ideas what's going on here? I've attached a .jpg version of my image to show you. |

My problem was actually with the unit colours, rather than the background - I did try using the tools posted in that thread, but to no avail.
In the end, I managed to get it working with GIMP. Didn't do anything differently - just GIMP seemed to produce a file that Warlords "accepted" for whatever reason. It was almost as though Warlords couldn't read the changes I'd made to the image's colours. I've made a few custom units now, and have gotten pretty far with creating my own map based on Game of Thrones The landmass is pretty much complete, with all the castles/ruins etc in place. Just working on custom units and finer details, which is taking a long time. Thanks |
