Hey guys! It's me, M0d3M.
I just realized that you never saw it. In Russia there is active Warlords 1 community warlords1.ru (they make tournaments often). And they created Mod (called WarMod). An attempt of rebalancing original game. Sirians are stronger now and Lord Bane is not so slow in the beginning. Changes: All capitals have def 7. Sirians have def 9 in their capital. Production in the capital of sirians is faster now but more expensive. Production time of archers in the capital of Elvallie is two turns, but their str is 5. Strength of their pegasi is 5 now. Strength of elven archers in Gildenhome city is 5 too. Speed of all light infantry from Ungor, Gorag, Bane's Citadel, Argrond and Malikor - 12. In the Ak-Farzon there are archers with production time 2 and strenght 5. www.warlords1.ru/files/WarMod.zip Just replace original exe file. |

Thanks for this. Indeed I did not know this mod existed. I'll grab a copy and post this on the site in the Downloads section Any chance the owners of the site would add Google translator translate.google.com/translate_tools to translate the Russian to English? If so I can then add this site to the links. I am curious how they do tournaments when there is no real PBEM in Warlords I. So you must have to pass the turn to the next player before you end your own turn? In that case can't they just look through all your armies/cities etc? KGB |

According to their rules you must send save file before finishing your turn. Next player has to finish turn immediately.
Of course its easy to cheat, but there is no other option. The first game is really great. And it is so sad that there is no native pbem multiplayer. Every game has its own GM, who observes it. And they have many additional rules. For example you cant attack with hero stack or with ally stack (every stack must have regular units). New hero cant attack in his first turn... and many more. |

Sounds like a lot of rules to me All needed to balance the imbalance that was Warlords I. Don't get me wrong, I loved it and played it to death on my Amiga in 1989-1991 time frame but it really is a limited game with no FOW, 1 map with exact same production etc. The only randomness is literally hero offers and ruins. I understand why that would appeal to Russians because it's a lot like Chess where you have very standard openings for all 8 sides that never get deviated from. KGB |

But it is not bad to have only one map (and setting). When everybory knows everything about the map it is completely different level. You know how to take advantage of every tower or hill there . Remember original DotA or League of Legends (insanely popular game now). |

Though I suppose Risk might have been a better comparison given it's a static map with up to 6 players with all the best locations and strategies being known. My problem is the original map isn't well balanced for 8 player play. It's fine for 1v1 or even 2v2 team type games. But 8 player FFA's are hugely unfair to several sides even with your modifications. The Sirian Capitol should have been moved to Herueth as a minimum. Warlords is based on Walter Bright's Empire and Empire is based on Risk. I means that Risk is something like grandfather to Walords. If you can edit the map itself then a few more things could be adjusted as well. You should tell it to the guys from warlords1.ru. I'm not part of this community . Back in the 90s (when i was kid), there were some guys who completely redrew the original map. It is possible. DoTA? - Not sure what that is. I never heard/played League of Legends. If you like RTS you should check it . |

DoTA/LoL are subgenre of RTS - MOBA, as its written in wikipedia.
i'd say thats much closer to RPG than to RTS as you have to command a hero and nothing else. |

I redrew a lot of the map a few years ago, but at some point, it screws up the AI. So I had to tame downwards my changes.
For instance, in my version of the game: -there is a road for the Sirians that goes through the hills and up towards the ruin; -there is also a road for Lord Bane to go Northward, but not southward. All of this was to help the AI. Doing more changes threw the routines for AI for a loop. I think either the AI would have to be reprogrammed, or the map you create would be for human multi-player only. There are two files to be edited. One being the exe (IIRC) and the other being a image file (the game does not automatically relate map changes to the graphic of Illuria in the corner). I was about to do more work on it over the next month, so if anyone cares I can keep you posted. |
